Venous Stasis Dermatitis (Venous Insufficiency)
Pathogenesis
Stasis dermatitis results from venous insufficiency (aka venous stasis), which is a failure of the veins to properly re-circulate blood back to the heart. It most often develops in the lower legs in patients with poor venous return to the heart
Key Manifestations
Initially:
Ankle edema
Progresses to:
Hyperpigmentation/Skin thickening
Eczematous changes (scaly, red, dry skin)
Varicose veins
Ulceration
