Venous Stasis Dermatitis (Venous Insufficiency)
Pathogenesis
- Stasis dermatitis results from venous insufficiency (aka venous stasis), which is a failure of the veins to properly re-circulate blood back to the heart. It most often develops in the lower legs in patients with poor venous return to the heart
Key Manifestations
Initially:
- Ankle edema
- Hyperpigmentation/Skin thickening
- Eczematous changes (scaly, red, dry skin)
- Varicose veins
- Ulceration
